Nutrition and Fitness are Disease Prevention and Management!

Diabetes Mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). It is caused by inefficient or insufficient or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone in your body responsible in helping your body change sugar to energy. Lifestyle modification including diet is an essential part of blood sugar control. Uncontrolled diabetes is associated with long-term complications of diabetes such as heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, amputation, blindness, nerve damage including erectile dysfunction (impotence).

Aggressive management of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and weight are essential in preventing or delaying the onset of long-term complications of diabetes. Individuals with diabetes who are overweight need to lose at least 5 – 10 % of their current weight as recommended by Canadian Diabetes Association.
